Hank Steinbrenner,

 • it does appear that both Theo and Cashman suggested that the Twins asked for more from them than what they asked from the Mets, it is certainly conceivable that the Twins wanted an extra premium price if Santana stayed within the league, after all, their eventrual goal is to compete for the playoff. and both the Yankees and Red Sox are a obvious obstical to that goal.

It's obviously a (non)move that could be second guessed. but eventrually they have to commite to actually comming up with a complete new core. the Yankees essentially been retooling on the run for the last few seasons anyway. so i'm not quiet sure what your trying to suggest with not retooling because your spending 200M, because guess what, they've spend around that much over the last 3 seasons AND they were forced to retool mid-seaon on the run ALL 3 season and i see little reason why they could avoid that this year with or without Santana. espically in the 05/06 cases. they got VERY lucky that their 2 1/2 B prospects panned out a lot better than anyone can reasonablly hope for.

Let's face it, if Wang and Cano bombed and Melky wasn't at least a fairly adequet plug gap then the Yankees would have been out of the playoffs for 3 years now. and all this would be moot since we'd be in complete rebuild mode and all the posts would be languishing on why the Yankees completely blew it... because they stashed way too many bad contracts and didnt get enough youngsters in time. they'd have to pull the stop sign sooner or later here. while I agree with you that Santana was probably a guy that I would go for trading Hughes for. that doesn't mean it's a steal or something. everyone have risks(espically pitches), but there's a pretty big differnce when the risks carry a 25M tag then a league minimum one.
